Jake's spatula hovered over the sizzling griddle. The beef ball hit the hot surface with a satisfying hiss. SMASH! He pressed down hard, flattening the meat into a thin patty. The edges crackled and crisped, releasing that intoxicating aroma of caramelized beef.
"First time?" asked Maria, the veteran cook beside him.
Jake nodded nervously. "I've been practicing at home for months."
She watched as he flipped the patty, revealing perfect golden-brown lacework. The cheese melted instantly on contact.
"Beautiful," she smiled. "You've got the magic touch."
Jake grinned. Finally, he'd mastered the art of the smash burger.
